How did you celebrate Valentine’s Day 2009?
50 years ago Davidson College students honored the day with a most
happy and rare event: the arrival of women onto the campus for a dance.
Davidson & Darwin

In honor of the Biology Department’s celebration of Charles Darwin’s 200th birthday on February 12th, 2009, we’ve scanned 2 letters from the presidential papers of William J. Martin. The November 1922 correspondence between Martin and William L. Poteat, president of Wake Forest College discusses their respective attitudes toward the theory of evolution.
And for more about the Biology Department ongoing recognition of Darwin, check out the department’s Darwin Year Calendar.
Freshman Riot of 1903
The week of February 14th generally brings to mind hearts and flowers but for Davidson College, it brings the anniversary of a week of campus turmoil. It started innocently enough.
Celebrating Mike Maloy
We were all saddened to learn of Mike Maloy’s death this week.
Emil Parker of the Sports Information office interviewed Mike for the Summer 1998 Track of the Cat and wrote an article “Lost and Found: Mike Maloy.”
If you have memories or a favorite story about Mike Maloy, please add a comment and share them with us.

The Willa Cather Creative Writing Award was created by William C. Doub Kerr in 1937. Doub Kerr, a member of the class of 1915, helped found the Blue Pencil Club, which later became a chapter of Sigma Upsilon, a literary honor society. The prize for the award was a copy of one of Cather’s novels.

Around the D
For generations of Davidson students the phrase “around the D” came naturally. It wasn’t just shorthand for Davidson College. It was a path they walked on and along regularly.
