The mountains of Western Carolina have drawn Davidson residents for decades. Many families established summer homes in Montreat and many others travel west for the Brevard Music Festival. This summer those traveling include staff from Davidson’s classical radio station WDAV (check their website).
But it’s not just a tradition of summer vacations ties Davidson to Brevard. The Brevard Music Institute had its beginnings on the Davidson College campus under the direction of James Christian Pfohl.
I’ve been meaning to write this blog entry for a while. At the end of last year, I read an obituary that left me misty-eyed. Though death and grief are normal, there were two things odd about this scene. First, I had never met the deceased. I knew and grew attached to him through the stories of others. Even odder was the fact that the obituary was almost 60 years old.
For the last few weeks, we’ve been featuring financial topics to go along with coverage of the Davidson Trust in the Spring 2009 Davidson Journal. (If you don’t get the Journal, you can read some stories online). This week’s blog focuses on some sacrifices that early faculty made in support of the college.
